Summary

This activity is designed to improve sentence accuracy and complexity. Most students can produce the key content words in a sentence. However, they have difficulty with accuracy because the functional words are difficult or can seem unimportant. This activity will help learners eliminate problems with these functional words by giving them immediate feedback on the mistakes they are making. It will also help students develop their use of more natural, varied and complex sentence structures.

TIP: Say the sentence out loud. Notice the types of mistake you make often. Focus on those types of errors. (singular/plural, subject-verb agreement, article use, prepositions, gerunds and infinitives, noun clauses, adjective clauses, word order, and word forms.)

Brian: Then we're on the chocolate factory of Forest Avenue.

Walter: All-day Milky Way.

Eddie: I can't wait. I want to be knee-deep in candy by the end of the night. I mean, like, for real—that's what I want.


Nicole: Hey, where's your lunch?

Eddie: We're not eating before Halloween tonight. Our candy bags aren't that big, so we're making extra room in our internal candy bags.

Nicole: I remember what it was like to go trick-or-treating.

Dave: You don't trick-or-treat?

Nicole: No, I might have been held back here, but my friends are in high school now. We're going to spend Halloween hanging in the park and seeing if anyone could buy us booze.

Walter: She's so cool.

Trent: I bet she drinks Zima.


Brian: I thought we were coming to school in our costumes. Somebody should have stopped me!

Louis: Eddie, where's your costume?

Eddie: Ross Perot. I'm Humpty Hump. You know, Shock G's alter ego from the Digital Underground.

Louis: Yes! Have you seen your brothers? UPS delivery lamb. Nice costume, Emery. You too, Evan. A lazy goalie. Scary for your teammates.

Evan: We're obviously Silence of the Lambs.

Emery: We knew he wouldn't get it. We talked about that. Remember?

Dave: Hey, Eddie!

Walter: Uh-oh, we got another ninja, Trent. Who wore it best?

Jessica: I'm not wearing a costume.

Walter: Ready to go, Eddie?

Louis: Go ahead, Eddie. Have a great Halloween with your friends.

Louis: And take your brothers with you.

Boys: Yay!

Louis: Go on, deliver that goalie.


This Halloween weekend. Me and Ghetto are trick-or-treating. Robbing little kids for bags till an adult gets behind our— My mind is playing tricks on me!

Kids: Trick or treat!

Louis: Where's Waldo? Uh, where's my candy? Right here. Where in the world is Diego San Francisco?

Kids: It's Carmen Sandiego!

Louis: What is?


Eddie: This feels amazing!

Louis: You know, if you eat all that candy, you're going to get sick.
