Although the two holidays are very similar, Canada and the United States both celebrate Thanksgiving a little bit differently. Let's take a
look into Canadian Thanksgiving versus American Thanksgiving.
Canadian Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October, while American Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of
November. I'm just here for the food. Just kidding! I also really value getting to spend time with my friends and family on Thanksgiving. And while
this is generally considered to be the core value of Thanksgiving in this day and age, it didn’t always used to be.
The significance of Thanksgiving traditions... The significance of American Thanksgiving was originally to celebrate being thankful for God’s
bounty and the generosity of the Indigenous peoples of the United States of America, while early Canadian Thanksgiving celebrations focused on thanking
God for a plentiful harvest. What was purely created as a harvest festival has now turned into a day where loved ones gather together to be grateful
for their lives and for each other.
As I mentioned earlier, American Thanksgiving and Canadian Thanksgiving fall on different days. Despite how long Thanksgiving has been a
tradition in both Canada and the United States, there was no set date for the holiday in either nation until the 19th and 20th centuries. On December
26th of 1941, President Roosevelt signed off on turning Thanksgiving into a national holiday for the entire country, while it wasn’t until 1957 that
Canadian Parliament proclaimed Thanksgiving a holiday in Canada.
Fun fact: Did you know that neither of the nations traditionally ate turkey as their signature meal until closer to the time of the American
Revolution in 1765? Speaking of meals, actually, American Thanksgiving dinner and Canadian Thanksgiving dinner vary in a few ways, primarily through how the
meals are prepared. For example, while Canadians love their good old mashed sweet potatoes with their turkey dinner, it is an American tradition to add
sugar, spice, and butter to their sweet potatoes to make a sweet potato casserole topped with marshmallows.
To wrap up the differences between Thanksgiving in the United States and Thanksgiving in Canada, both holidays were ultimately days designed
for us to celebrate everything we’re thankful for in our lives—from the crops that grew the food we eat to the people we choose to surround ourselves
with.
I hope you all remember to be a little extra thankful this Thanksgiving and cherish every moment that has brought you to where you are today.
