Summary
This activity is designed to improve sentence accuracy and complexity. Most students can produce the key content words in a sentence. However, they have difficulty with accuracy because the functional words are difficult or can seem unimportant. This activity will help learners eliminate problems with these functional words by giving them immediate feedback on the mistakes they are making. It will also help students develop their use of more natural, varied and complex sentence structures.
TIP: Say the sentence out loud. Notice the types of mistake you make often. Focus on those types of errors. (singular/plural, subject-verb agreement, article use, prepositions, gerunds and infinitives, noun clauses, adjective clauses, word order, and word forms.)

Option A
Daniel: So, Beata, tell us about your meeting with Mateo. Maybe you can go and enjoy some sunshine. You've earned it.
Beata: Well, he talked a lot about the color of the product. His team carried out some market research last month: interviewed patients, healthcare professionals, pharmacists.
Clarice: Wait, wait, wait. Did you say pharmacists?
Beata: Yes, they did some focus groups, sent out a really detailed questionnaire.
Clarice: And that's what he asked them about: the color? Seriously, what's wrong with the color? Why did they spend so much time on this?
Beata: Sorry, I didn't really have a chance to ask.
Clarice: You didn't?
Daniel: Mateo can be a little domineering, Clarice. Have you ever met him?
Clarice: No, no, I haven't. Sorry. Please go on, Beata.
Beata: Well, according to their focus group results—I have them here if you want to see them—people prefer the darker shades...
Daniel: Beata, what does Mateo want us to change exactly?
Beata: The color of the Diab Sensor. But I told Mateo I'd get back to him. I hope that was okay.
Daniel: Of course, you did the right thing. Clarice, what do you think? Can we change the color?
Clarice: I'm sorry, no. It's really not possible at this stage of the production schedule.
Daniel: Right, I thought so. Anyway, Beata, tell us about the rest of the discussion.
Beata: There's possibly some problem with storage, but we can come to that later. And, um, yes, the packaging. There's a problem with the design.
Daniel: What do you mean? A problem with the design of the packaging?
Beata: Mateo doesn't think it's very practical.
Daniel: So, what does he want exactly? Does he want us to change the design?
Beata: Well, yes.
Daniel: Are you sure?
Beata: Um, yeah. I guess so.
Daniel: Next, he'll be asking for a whole new product altogether. Clarice, is it possible to change the packaging design?
Clarice: Maybe. I'll have to check with our product manager. But at this stage, it's a long shot.
Daniel: It's a very long shot. I know. How long will it take for you to confirm this?
Clarice: I'm not sure. We are closed tomorrow for a public holiday.
Daniel: Can you get back to us by Monday?
Clarice: Monday, yes, no problem.
Daniel: Beata, do you have any other news for us?
Beata: Um, no, not really.
Option B
Daniel: So, Beata, it's over to you. Tell us about your meeting with Mateo. And once you're done, you can go and enjoy some sunshine.
Beata: Of course. There's not much to tell really. Mateo wants to change the color of the product to a darker shade of blue.
Daniel: The color of the Diab Sensor itself, or the packaging?
Beata: The color of the Diab Sensor. I told him I'd get back to him. I hope that was okay.
Daniel: Of course. Clarice?
Clarice: I'm sorry. It's not possible at this stage of the production schedule.
Daniel: Yes, I thought so. So, tell us about the rest of the discussion.
Beata: There's possibly some problem with storage, but we can come to that later. And, um, yes, they wanted to change the design of the
packaging, but I told them that wasn't possible. That's about it, I think.
Daniel: Really, nothing else. Mateo must not have been in a talkative mood for the first time in his life.
Beata: Yes, that's everything.
Reflection A: That went well. I wasn't totally sure Daniel wanted to know all the little details, but I'd rather he knew
everything. Anyway, sightseeing time.
Reflection B: That went well. There was no point in boring them with all the little details. We would have been here all day.
And if Daniel wanted to know more information he would have asked more questions.
Anyway, time to join the tourists.
