Summary
This activity is designed to improve sentence accuracy and complexity. Most students can produce the key content words in a sentence. However, they have difficulty with accuracy because the functional words are difficult or can seem unimportant. This activity will help learners eliminate problems with these functional words by giving them immediate feedback on the mistakes they are making. It will also help students develop their use of more natural, varied and complex sentence structures.
TIP: Say the sentence out loud. Notice the types of mistake you make often. Focus on those types of errors. (singular/plural, subject-verb agreement, article use, prepositions, gerunds and infinitives, noun clauses, adjective clauses, word order, and word forms.)

In the vast desert of Australia, there lives a unique animal. It lives by digging underground like a mole, but it's a marsupial, more closely related to kangaroos
than mammalian moles. Now, you might not have heard of it. In fact, very few people have ever actually seen one. And because Australia has listed it as an endangered
species, you're not even allowed to go looking for it. Just how rare is it to see this marsupial mole?
I was reading a paper, and the quote that I was able to find is that only 5 to 10 moles are seen per decade.
Well, tell me about it. What does it look like?
Well, start with a basic body plan of a mole. So, it's long and cylindrical. When you're looking for its nose, what you'll see is this flat shield, almost like a protrusion.
If you look for its mouth, it does have a mouth, but it probably is closed most of the time because it's digging, it's going to be burrowing. If you look for its eyes or its
ears, you're going to be sorely disappointed. The eyelids are fused shut for the marsupial mole, and it lacks an external ear.
So it's blind?
It also lacks an optic nerve, so I would agree with that statement.
So, is this a case of because the mole wasn't using its eyesight, it just lost it?
That's really hard for us to tease apart, but anecdotally, that would make sense.
There's a case to be made that maybe it was advantageous to lose the vision because your eyes take up a lot of energy. And so if they no longer are needing the eyes for survival,
and one of the members of its species loses its vision, that would actually save a lot of energy, so it doesn't have to forage around for insects as much.
Wow. How does it move through the desert?
So, the mole has two big claws at its forefront, and it uses those to tunnel its way through the sands of the great Australian desert. What has been written about it is that the
movement kind of looks like it's swimming through the sand. And through that swimming motion, what it ends up doing is it goes and backfills its burrow.
So, it doesn't leave a tunnel behind? It literally swims through the sand.
Yeah.
Now, what about the fact that this mole is a marsupial like a kangaroo? Well, as a marsupial, does it have a pouch?
It does have a pouch. And what's different about its pouch compared to other marsupials is that its pouch is inverted. And that's probably... And we had to speculate, we would guess
the reason that it's inverted is because as the marsupial mole is digging through the sand, the pouch then, because it's upside down, won’t collect sand. So then the baby marsupials
moles won't be filled with sand in the pouch as they're developing.
Oh, I see. So, the opening is facing towards the lower part of the body.
Yes, underneath the tail.
Dr. Lucas. Thank you so much for your time.
Thank you so much, Bob.
