This is the Global News Podcast from the BBC World Service. I'm Valerie Sanderson and in the early hours of Saturday the 18th of July. These are our main stories.

The US government's leading infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci says all Americans should wear masks to stop a sharp rise in coronavirus cases.

The American defense secretary has in effect banned the flying of the Confederate flag at all U.S. military sites.

There's been little sign of progress at a summit where EU leaders are attempting to agree a huge covid 19 stimulus package.

Also in this podcast arise Sir Tom, the centenarian who's been knighted by Queen Elizabeth for raising millions of dollars during the pandemic.
